Hounslow Council has published plans for a redesigned barrier on Staveley Road near the junction with Park Road.

The 'lego-style' red and white barrier is to be replaced by permanent raised low level planting across Staveley Road with a 3.4m gap in between to allow cyclists to pass each way. Pedestrians would be able to cross diagonally from one side of Staveley Road to the other through a 1.6m gap. Four trees would be planted at each side of the barrier.

There was some surprise among residents when the council decided to retain the barrier even after the implementation of restrictions on the eastern section of Staveley Road which some felt made it redundant. However, the council is arguing that the barrier remains important in reducing through traffic in the area.

Opponents of the barrier contend that, with traffic now unable to enter into the Grove Park area from Hartington Road, Staveley Road and Burlington Lane at most times, the barrier serves no purpose other than to require residents to take more circuitous routes to get to their homes, thereby increasing traffic in the area, and redirects traffic along less suitable roads such as Park Road.

One local resident commented, "It will be a blessed relief to see the ugly barrier go and hopefully the new design will become an attractive feature. Although, I welcome the idea of new trees they do seem to be situated at points where there are already restricted sightlines.

"The junction has already increased in complexity and the design seems to be predicated on people sticking to the 20mph speed limit. There is a noticeable increase in traffic along the north section of Park Road which may have something to do with the new restrictions so I'm not convinced this design is a positive for safety for cyclists and pedestrians."

Hounslow Council did not respond to a request for comment and a question on when the new barrier is likely to be in place.
