The current severe traffic congestion in the Chiswick area due to lane restrictions on the A4 looks set to be exacerbated by roadworks taking place on Acton Lane.

Electricity company Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is planning to dig up the road from Saturday 20 August to Tuesday 24 August.

Signs notifying residents of the planned work have appeared near Chiswick Park tube station but according to information submitted to roadworks.org the location of the work will be closer to the junction of Acton Lane and Chiswick High Road near the entrance to Sainsbury’s. It is indicated that road closures will be required but, it is not clear at this stage if this will be in both directions.

Previous utility works at this location have led to severe traffic disruption around Chiswick and the timing of the latest disruption may lead to even worse congestion in the area. The start date coincides with a bus strike and a national rail strike which will disrupt London Overground and London Underground services on Saturday 20 August. In addition, tube services will be additionally impacted by the effects of the strike on London Overground the previous day.

When Acton Lane has been closed on previous occasions, Ealing Council has refused to consider suspending access restrictions at the Fisher’s Lane underpass, which will mean residents of North Chiswick will have to access their homes either by driving around the North Circular and approaching through Bollo Lane or proceeding along Chiswick High Road to Turnham Green Terrace. These routes are both regularly heavily congested due to the work by TfL on the A4 and in addition, there are traffic lights on Turnham Green Terrace due to work also by SSEN taking place there. The work on Turnham Green Terrace is due to be finished on Monday (15 August). Thames Water are working on Gunnersbury Lane during the Acton Lane works which will require multi-way signals to operate meaning an alternate route may be more congested than usual.

A spokesperson for SSEN said, “SSEN is carrying out works on Acton Lane from 20 to 24 August as part of an essential connection for a customer.

“All such works, which require traffic management to enable safe working procedures, have to be approved by the local authority and carried out on the dates permitted by them.

“SSEN apologises for any inconvenience this temporary traffic management may cause and would like to reassure its customers that, as a considerate constructor, all works are designed to cause the minimum of disruption.”
