Sponsorship and support wanted for Summer Fair marking milestone

Cavendish Primary School Summer Fair takes place on Friday 24 June on the school grounds on Edensor Road. Thee event marks the end of a historic year for the school in which it celebrated its 70th anniversary.
Cavendish Primary School was established in 1952, and is a single form school which caters to children aged four to 11, and also offers nursery provision for three and four year olds.
John Fish, 73, who grew up in Chiswick and joined Cavendish Primary School just one year after it first opened its gates, recalls, “I was only a few weeks off being 5 when I joined in 1953. My teacher was Miss Binney and the Headmaster was Mr Gilgallon, who I know lived to be 100! One of my earliest memories is taking to the stage in the school hall in a play about the Cavaliers and Roundheads. I played a swashbuckling cavalier and was supposed to sing but I had only one note and that was flat. In the end, my friend Ronald Shavreen had to stand in and sing from behind the curtain while I mimed.”
Mr Fish who lived at 2 Staveley Gardens, an estate of 50 houses built by the Cherry Blossom boot polish company just a few minutes from the school, and whose mother lived in the same house until 2017, says he enjoyed his time at the school and was looking forward to the Summer Fair, which he hopes to attend with his wife Linda.
“I remember my time at Cavendish fondly and look forward to taking part in the 70th anniversary festivities and recounting how different things were back then. The kids won’t believe it when I tell them that we used to wear balaclavas to school to protect us from the London smog, which on some days was so bad that very few pupils would even make it into class in the morning,” he said.
The Summer Fair, which will include food stalls, arts and crafts activities, a raffle and live entertainment for the children, their families and friends, is the first time the school has held an on-site large-scale event since the start of the pandemic .

Friends of Cavendish, the school’s PTA, is looking for sponsors for both raffle prizes, which will be drawn at the Summer Fair, as well as general sponsorship of the school. Friends of Cavendish, the school’s PTA, has charity status so any sponsorship will be tax deductible. Sponsorship money will be used to invest in teaching materials, including digital tools and books, sports equipment and school outings.
The school’s Cavendish Code aims to instil the importance of respect in children for one another as well as for their teachers and for different cultures. Rated as a ‘Good School’ in the last Ofsted report, the school’s core values of kindness, resilience, integrity and curiosity, are visible in everything it does.
Clare Frewer, Headteacher at Cavendish Primary School, said, “This year we celebrate our 70th anniversary and I am glad we have the opportunity to hold our Summer Fair to mark the occasion. As a school we are committed to maintaining strong partnerships in our community and actively seek to forge new relationships. We are fortunate to be set in spacious, leafy grounds close to the River Thames, Dukes Meadows and Chiswick House and we endeavour to maximise our locality through our broad and rich curriculum.
“I proudly took the position of Headteacher in Summer Term 2022 and I'm delighted to lead the school, with committed staff and governors, to become a dynamic and thriving primary school offering an excellent education that is creative, engaging, ambitious and inclusive.”
