Old Meadonians

Old Meadonians progressed to the third round of the A.F.A. Middlesex & Essex Senior Cup with a stuttering display which saw them well in control of the first half only to squander a two goal lead within minutes of the restart.

Once more reserve striker Henry Turner was on target. After twenty minutes a superb headed clearance by centre back Ian Williamson found Steve Bowring who put Turner in to score from the edge of the area.

Ten minutes later it was two as Turner converted Jack Costello’s cross with an ingenious flick. A modest Economicals side from two divisions below were allowed back into the game by two poor clearances and proceeded to hold out deep into the second period of extra time.

With only three minutes to go to the penalty shoot out Dan Salanson met a cross with a ferocious volley which came back off the post for Bowring to tap in. A minute later a Steve Kearney shot from the edge of the box was parried by the home keeper for Dwayne Rhone to administer the coup de grace.

Team: Greening, Hanley, Butler, Williamson, Salanson, Costello, Kearney, McGuinness, Rhone, Turner, Bowring.
