A planning application to build a two-storey pool house in the garden of a Chiswick Mall house looks set to be approved.

The proposal, which also includes an outdoor pool, is for Island House which is undergoing a substantial makeover.

There was one objection on the grounds that the structure would be overbearing and overshadow the garden, but council planning officers decided that there would be no harm to neighbouring properties, the listed building or the surrounding conservation area. The pool house would be nearer properties at the rear on British Grove.

Planners' investigations found that a large glasshouse was situated on the site of the proposed pool house in the 19th century.

The application was made on behalf of Jason Gissing, one of the founders of Ocado, who paid over £7,000,000 for Island House and has made plans for a substantial makeover of the 4-storey, 6-bedroom house with unrivalled river views with the aim of making it a 'forever home' for his family.

Former occupants of the house include Warwick Draper who published a history of Chiswick and Arthur John and Alexander Sich who were members of the brewing family that set up the brewery on Church Street.

In addition to the pool house, a separate planning application has been made for the installation of solar panels and an air source heat pump whilst, unusually for a listed building, air conditioning would be installed on the upper floors. Rotten windows are being replaced and the original layout of the house is being returned with alterations made when the property was divided up into maisonettes removed.
