Chiswick's house price record has been smashed once again with Walpole House on Chiswick Mall selling for £12,500,000.

The property already held the Chiswick record for the most expensive sale having been bought just over two years ago by flamboyant fashion designer Jasper Conran for £7,250,000.

The illustrious Chiswick Mall home once provided the setting for Miss Pinkerton's Seminary for Young Ladies.

Set on Chiswick’s most expensive road and with a panorama of the Thames both upstream and downstream, Walpole House takes its name from the Hon Thomas Walpole (nephew of Sir Robert Walpole, England’s first Prime Minister) who lived there from 1798 till 1803.

The property has been purchased for cash. It has been suggested that the premium paid was due to the property having been substantially refitted by Conran making it literally a designer house. Conran has been building up his property portfolio in recent years.

Earlier this year he bought Ven House, a Grade I-listed mansion in Somerset that had been languishing on the market for two years. He is believed to have paid a little less than the asking price, £8.5m. The nine-bed, six-reception pile comes with 34 acres, two cottages and a tennis court, and last sold for £8.8m in 2004. The sale of Walpole House appears to have provided the funds to pay for this transaction.
