Man Found Guilty of Aiding Daniel Khalife Escape

Fellow inmate arranged for him to get cash from an ATM

A man has been convicted for helping escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife, whose dramatic flight from HMP Wandsworth in September 2023 briefly brought parts of west London, including Chiswick, to a standstill.

Counter Terrorism Policing London confirmed that Adeel Khan, 32, assisted Khalife after his escape by arranging for him to receive £400 in cash — money that allowed the fugitive to buy a mobile phone and other items while evading capture. Khalife, who was later convicted of espionage and terrorism offences, was on the run for three days before being arrested near a canal in Northolt.

During the manhunt, police activity was concentrated across west London, with helicopters circling over Chiswick and armed officers deployed around the near Chiswick Roundabout and Chiswick House Gardens. Roads were closed and traffic slowed as officers searched vehicles and spoke to drivers, following reports that Khalife might have travelled through the area after leaving Wandsworth.

In the course of the investigation and following his arrest, it became clear to officers that Khalife was not acting completely alone in his attempts to evade capture by police.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTP London, said: “A huge amount of police resource was used during the manhunt for Daniel Khalife — a man who has now been convicted of espionage and terrorism offences. Adeel Khan knowingly helped him to try and evade capture by arranging for him to be given £400 cash, which enabled him to buy a mobile phone and other items that helped extend his time on the run. ”

Investigators discovered that Khalife and Khan, who had met in prison, were in contact via borrowed mobile phones. Khan’s friend Imran Chowdhury was also charged after CCTV showed him withdrawing the £400 from a bank in Richmond and handing it to Khalife, though he was later found not guilty of assisting an offender. The mobile phone used in prison by Khan was never recovered.

Khan, of Waltham Forest, was convicted at Snaresbrook Crown Court and will be sentenced on 4 September.
