Tree Collapse Response Shows Community's Brave Face to Ill Fortune |

Chiswick Homefields councillor Gerald McGregor reports back
June 8, 2025 Conservative Party members in the new parliamentary constituency of Hammersmith and Chiswick all have local ward Conservative Management groups providing a policy focus and feedback to their councillors. The three Chiswick wards (Gunnersbury, Homefields and Riverside) have been actively campaigning on a range of issues co-ordinated by Cllr Gabriella Giles who is a constituency officer. The result is feedback from residents hugely concerned about local issues involving Hounslow Council and its treatment of the needs of taxpayers, residents and council tenants and responding to their priorities. Undoubtedly the failures of National Government policy since the 2024 election and the consequent “U-turns” in benefit payments and the disappointing lack of growth promised in the election are an increasing feature of messages and local responses across Chiswick to your councillors. Political activity, positive economic actions and maintaining social cohesion are a hugely important set of values that underly our freedoms and our democratic values and the rule of law. Your local Conservative Councillors all stand together and with you in our continuing struggle to improve the wellbeing of our society as a whole, to achieve improvements in living standards and fairness in taxation and proper levels of social welfare that assist people both out of long-term poverty and out of temporary difficulty. Tree Collapses on Acton Green at the start of Geen Day
272 and 94 Buses affected for three hours by two large boughs coming off the tree opposite the PostRoom Café at the junction with the Avenue Chiswick as a community is continuing to show a brave face to ill fortune. The Bedford Park Festival organised by St Michael and All Angels Church in Bedford Park is a regular summer feature and this year the festival includes locally provided talks, recitals, concerts and dramatic performances which help cement the social cohesion of the area. I have been privileged to act over the years in various positions alongside many other individuals in managing organising the Green Day events. This year I am an onlooker and the variety of community activities and the two days of the opening weekend where Acton Green is the backdrop populated by stalls and sideshows always attracts large crowds. This year there was a major incident, fortunately without any casualties. Not long after the official opening of the festival there was a potential disaster A large tree on the edge of Acton Green decided it was time to dispense with two very large branches that crashed onto South Parade (which most people know as a very busy thoroughfare). No cars were hit, and even the metal railings at the edge of the green appeared to escape damage and most importantly there was nobody walking close to the area when the collapse occurred The rescue crew, acting on behalf of Ealing Council, were from Hounslow Council. Many thanks for their prompt response and the advice given about safety and hazard after their attendance.
