A piece of artwork in Dukes Meadows was smashed in an act of vandalism that took place this Sunday night (13 July).
The sleeping angel head installed, which was installed near the playground in January was created by artist Elizabeth Rollins Scott who was born and lived in Chiswick before relocating to Somerset.
It was a popular addition for the many families particularly children who have been visiting the area in large numbers during the hot weather and many have already expressed sadness at its loss.
Dukes Meadows Trust Chair Paul Davis said, “Many people have contacted us to say how upset and angry they are. It was a very selfish and stupid thing to do. We are offering a reward of £500 to anyone who can provide information leading to the prosecution of whoever was responsible for this criminal damage. Anyone who has any information can contact us at admin@dukesmeadowstrust.org.“
Dukes Meadows Trust built the Splash Pool and playground in the park and is entirely responsible for the maintenance and management of the Splash Pool as well as all the trees, flower beds and hedges in the park. It does so with the help of a group of volunteers which it describes as ‘wonderful’.
Last year the Trust led on the restoration of Promenade Approach and the Pump House, commissioning the design and raising all the funds. The Council provided a grant towards the cost from its Thriving Communities Fund.
Mr Davis said, “Our aim in building the play areas was to provide not just a playground, but a lovely place for families to enjoy spending time. The angel added to the beauty of the space and had become a much-loved feature.”
The Trust hopes to replace the piece after consideration of what would be most suitable.
