A new exhibition at the Clayton Hotel Chiswick brings one of West London’s most distinctive artistic communities into public view.

Confluence , running from 23 April to 7 June, showcases work by artists based on Johnson’s Island, the small, semi-hidden creative enclave tucked behind Brentford High Street where the River Brent, the Grand Union Canal and the Thames converge.

Johnson’s Island has been home to studios since the 1990s, when a cluster of painters, sculptors and makers took over the former industrial buildings and transformed the island into a working artistic hub. Over the years it has developed a reputation for its open studios, collaborative spirit and the way its riverside setting shapes the work produced there. The island’s geography — surrounded by water, slightly apart from the city yet deeply connected to its industrial past — has fostered a community that thrives on experimentation, shared space and the ebb and flow of ideas.

Confluence draws on that energy. The exhibition brings together a bold mix of practices, exploring themes of diversity, movement and the creative charge that comes from artists working side by side in a place defined by water. Visitors can expect painting, sculpture, mixed media and work that reflects the island’s unique sense of place.

A private view will be held on 23 April from 5:30–7:30pm, offering a chance to meet the artists and learn more about the island community that continues to shape West London’s cultural landscape.
