Numbers/Embassylands for one week only
Following the critical and commercial success of its sell-out run last year, the double bill Numbers and Embassyland comes to the Tabard Theatre for five nights. While the stories of both these short plays seem unrelated, a sudden twist reveals the fact they are more connected than was at first apparent. Young playwright Kieron Barry has been premiering a new work every year since 1998. His most recent plays include Cumquats (2004), Black Soap (2003), and Mahler and Rachmaninov (2002). A collection of five of his plays was recently published as a single volume. His writing has been described as being like Stoppard or Shaffer when they were still unknown. The Stage said of the production, “This double bill is a wonderfully crafted, well-constructed and deftly thought out piece of theatre” Numbers - Directed by Britten Barry Cast: Ellen Collier, Nicola Fisher, Rebecca Naylor, Catherine Steadman. A comedy set in the midst of a power struggle at an English girls’ public school. The vicious Katherine Judah is desperate to be the new Head Girl, and the atmosphere in the study dorm an hour before the crucial announcement is tense. With quick fire, totally naturalistic dialogue, the play examines the themes of identity, bullying, cruelty and the paradoxes of boarding school life - great luxury yet primitive behaviour; huge erudition yet emotional immaturity. Embassyland - Directed by Rosie Wilkinson Cast: Alex Macqueen, Adrian Fear, Nathan Griggs, Robert Linden.
