Marks and Spencer to Close for Several Months
Staff confirm long rumoured plans for extension of High Road store

Staff at Marks and Spencer have confirmed to customers that the store is set to close for several months for refurbishment and expansion
Depending on the staff member spoken to the closure could last from mid-June to September or right up until Christmas.
Although the project has not been officially confirmed, it is understood that the work will see the store expanded on both sides taking over the unit shortly to be vacated by Poundland on one side and the two empty units, which used to be occupied by Mint Velvet and Up and Running, on the other.
Staff at the store have been told that they will be redeployed with positions available at the Westfield branch as well as the new store planned in Fulham.
The retailer’s recently announced £90 million investment programme identified the branch at 236 Chiswick High Road as a store that was performing particularly well. However, the new expanded store will not be a full line one but will remain in the existing FoodHall format with the possibility of a café being added. This is the strategy being followed in the six new FoodHalls Marks and Spencer is planning to open along with the refurbishment of 11 existing ones including Chiswick.
The new layout will have a revamped produce section with a wider selection of fresh fruits and vegetables in a market style layout and a larger bakery operating throughout the day.
The makeover will also include the latest technology to run more energy efficiently with LED lighting, natural refrigerant fridges and freezers which the company says will achieve a 60% emission reduction.
The expansion is expected to be challenging with the sites having differing heights and number of floors and there is also a suggestion that asbestos may need to be removed.
It is not clear at this stage whether planning permission will be needed for any part of the expansion. No applications have been made relating to the site.
