Speculation continues about possible M&S expansion into unit
May 12, 2025 Following months of rumour, it has finally been officially confirmed that Poundland’s Chiswick High Road is to close. It had long been speculated that the retailer was to depart both because of financial issues with the parent company and due to possible ambitions on the part of next-door neighbour Marks & Spencer to expand. The discounter is currently displaying signs in the front window giving Wednesday 28 May as the last day of opening. Staff had been telling customers the previous week that this was when the branch was due to shut. We have asked Poundland for an explanation of the decision but the departure from Chiswick is the latest in a string of store closures across the country including locations in Gravesend, Clapham Junction. The owner of the group on 800 stores across the UK is Pepco, a Polish clothes retailer. It was forced to make a £642million write down on the value of its investment last December after Poundland reported a 3.6% drop in like for like sales and a 21.5% drop in underlying earnings for the year to September 2024. The drop in like for like sales has accelerated to 7.3% in the first quarter of the current financial year. Further challenges are ahead due to tax changes including the rise in employers’ National Insurance contributions and reports have suggested a sale may be considered. Marks & Spencer recently confirmed that it was planning a major investment in its Chiswick branch but has refused up to now to confirm whether the units either side of its High Road store, which will both now be vacant form part of its plans. We have approached the retailer for an update.
