Tideway Scullers School (TSS) Juniors excelled in their first race of the season on Saturday 23rd October.

First to race were Natasha and Rosa in the WJ14 2x who sculled with great determination and were looking good for the first 1500m holding off another double. Unfortunately poor steering through the tricky bridge section let them down.

Monty (J13) posted the fastest time of the boys in our group, coming 5th overall in the J14 1x , chased by Lucas Rod in 6th place, and Ben Brophy in 8th.

David Ambler, also J13, sculled very confidently in his borrowed boat to finish 9th. Lucas Durkan and Jack Williams finished 11th and 12th respectively, neither able to find their form in that race, and we all felt Jack's disappointment as he struggled in his borrowed boat.

Saskia and Ella showed the squad what was possible by posting the fastest two WJ14 1x times of the morning, and this wasn't challenged in the afternoon, so a one / two for TSS, with first for Saskia.

Everyone got completely drenched by a very sudden and freak rainstorm waiting to land and went straight out to race again in Division 2.

The boys J14 4x+ (stroke Jack, Ben, Lucas D, Lucas R bow, cox Monty pictured above) went out all fired up and hammered their way down the course, using some older girls quads behind them to maintain full steam, and knocking aside any doubles and quads ahead of them. Well steered Monty, and a first by a whopping 1:26.

Ella and Saskia in WJ14 2x repeated their sculling prowess against strong opponents, and came first by a creditable 18 seconds.

David and Hamish in J13 2x had a fantastic race, full of chase all the way, and also came 1st, their win by some 14 seconds.

So four pots for the J13/14 squad. Well done everyone!
