Southfield Road Crossing Moves a Step Closer |

Councillor reports that site surveys are underway ahead of consultation
November 19, 2025 A long-running campaign to improve pedestrian safety on Southfield Road is nearing a breakthrough, with a formal consultation on a new crossing now expected to take place early next year. The move follows years of lobbying by local residents and Southfield’s Liberal Democrat councillors, who have repeatedly raised concerns about speeding and road safety on the busy east–west route between Acton and Chiswick. Despite a 20mph speed limit, community-led speed monitoring sessions over the past decade have consistently recorded vehicles travelling well above the limit—particularly on the long, straight stretch between The Avenue and Acton Lane. Calls for a pedestrian crossing date back at least ten years, with residents and councillors proposing a range of safety measures including zebra crossings, electronic speed displays, and traffic calming features. These proposals were repeatedly submitted to Ealing Council, but campaigners say they were ignored by the Labour administration until now. It is thought that the most likely point for the crossing is at the top end of Carlton Road to link with the Southfield Recreation Ground as this would form part of C49 but there has been no official confirmation of this location. According to Southfield Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Steed, site surveys and technical investigations are currently underway, with a public consultation expected to begin in early 2026. The consultation will seek residents’ views on the proposed location and design of the crossing, and will help shape the final implementation plan. Cllr Steed said, “Liberal Democrats say for many years the Southfield Councillors have worked with the local community to monitor and address speeding issues in Southfield Road and it has taken nearly ten years for Ealing Labour to take any notice of this issue. It is good to see that there is finally some progress on the matter. Once we have received clear indication that the consultation is open, we will share the link with residents to encourage continuing local input.”
