Decade-long campaign could finally meet with success
May 25, 2026 A decade‑long campaign to improve pedestrian safety on Southfield Road has taken a significant step forward, with Ealing Council now launching a formal consultation on a proposed zebra crossing between Strauss Road and St Albans Avenue. Letters were delivered to residents last week outlining the plans, marking the first concrete action after years of pressure from the local community and councillors. The proposal would see a raised‑table zebra crossing installed on the busy east–west route linking Acton and Chiswick. The elevated surface is designed to slow vehicles and provide step‑free access for pedestrians, while the crossing itself would be wider than standard and include a facility for mounted cyclists. The scheme also includes resurfacing sections of the footway, though it would require the removal of three parking spaces. Earlier proposals for the crossing on this road situated it near the junction with Carlton Road to incorporate it into the cycleway C49. The new proposal puts situates the crossing closer to the entrance to the park opposite St Peter’s Church just west of the bus stop. Residents have been invited to submit their views via an online survey, which closes at midnight on 10 June . The consultation follows years of lobbying by residents, community groups and Southfield’s Liberal Democrat councillors, who have repeatedly highlighted speeding and safety concerns along the long, straight stretch between The Avenue and Acton Lane. Despite a 20mph limit, community‑led speed monitoring sessions have consistently recorded vehicles travelling well above the limit. Southfield Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Steed previously said it had taken “nearly ten years for Ealing Labour to take any notice of this issue”, adding that residents had been “ignored” despite repeated submissions and evidence of persistent speeding. Residents can complete the consultation online or paper copies can be requested by emailing highwaysservices@ealing.gov.uk or writing to: Highways Services Team, Ealing Council, Perceval House, 14–16 Uxbridge Road, W5 2HL.
