Sutton Court Road Roadworks Expected to Cause Major Disruption

Councillor requests suspension of Grove Park traffic restrictions

Drivers in Chiswick are being warned to expect significant disruption from next week as Sutton Court Road is partially closed for major gas-main works, with concerns already raised about the impact on traffic across Grove Park, Strand-on-the-Green and the A4 corridor.

From Monday 27 July, vehicles travelling northbound on Sutton Court Road will be required to turn left only at the A4 Great West Road. The restriction, displayed on a dot-matrix sign at the junction, is scheduled to run until Monday 14 September, though information published by Cadent suggests the works may only be authorised until 14 August, raising questions about the accuracy of the signage and the true duration of the closure.

Cadent’s mapping indicates that the gas main will be dug up north of the A4 junction, forcing all northbound traffic away from Sutton Court Road and onto the westbound A4 necessitating using Chiswick Roundabout to resume a journey along Sutton Court Road.

Traffic on the A4, both eastbound and westbound will not be allowed to turn north at Sutton Court Road. It is understood that it will still be possible to leave the A4 eastbound at Sutton Lane North (by the Porsche garage) and proceed to Sutton Court Road via Barrowgate Road.

The western footway on Sutton Court Road will also be suspended between its junction with Cedars Road (A4) and the extended northern building line of Chiswick Methodist Church.

Works will be phased as such that not all restrictions may apply at any one time.

Cadent and Hounslow Council have not yet responded to requests for further information about the work.

Conservative opposition leader Cllr Jack Emsley said Chiswick Riverside councillor Gabriella Giles had asked for further information and was awaiting a reply.

“We’re aware that this could cause significant traffic issues,” he said, “so Cllr Giles has asked for restrictions on Staveley, Hartington and Strand-on-the-Green to be lifted during the works to alleviate some of the problems.”

If Grove Park’s restrictions remain in place, local traffic will still be able to reach the A316 via Hartington Road and Burlington Lane.

Transport for London’s bus status updates appear to support Cadent’s shorter timeframe, showing that stops between ‘Barrowgate Road’ (F) and ‘Turnham Green / Sutton Lane North’ (XX) on the E3 and 272 routes will not be served from 7am on Monday 27 July to Friday 14 August. No diversion routes have been published.

The new works follow a series of recent closures on the same stretch of road. In January 2026, Thames Water shut the southbound lane of Sutton Court Road over two weekends to repair a water main opposite Chiswick Methodist Church. Drivers were diverted via Barrowgate Road and forced to loop around Hogarth Roundabout to reach Grove Park or return westbound on the A4.

And in October 2025, Cadent’s gas-main project on Burlington Lane overran by more than two weeks after engineers discovered a crack in a pipe. The northbound closure caused heavy congestion around the Hogarth Roundabout and the A4, with residents and businesses expressing frustration at the lack of clear updates. Although access restrictions on Staveley Road were temporarily lifted during that closure, residents criticised the failure to use the opportunity to improve drainage on Burlington Lane, which regularly floods during heavy rain.

With Sutton Court Road now facing up to seven weeks of restrictions — and uncertainty over the exact end date — residents are bracing for another period of congestion affecting key routes through Chiswick.
