Two New Bakeries Open Near Turnham Green Terrace |

Frankie's and Debbie Jo both offering bread, pastries and coffee November 1, 2025 Within a short space of time, two new bakeries have been launched near Turnham Green Terrace to add to Chiswick’s already rich choice. Frankie’s has taken over the unit vacated by the much-missed Elias shoe-mender on Chiswick Common Road and Debbie Jo has moved in on the ground floor unit that was formerly part of estate agent Featherstone Leigh’s Chiswick operations. They are about 50 yards away from each other as the crow flies. Both have been well received by customers so far with both bread and pastries attracting praise although the emphasis seems to be on quality rather than price with £3 plain croissants and £3.45 pain au chocolats at Frankie’s and £6.50 sourdough loaves at Debbie Jo attracting comment. Despite the expense, queues have been spotted outside both premises. One happy customer said of the chocolate croissants at Frankie’s, “The price premium over Starbucks is a pound, which actually makes it excellent value because it is ten times better.” Debbie Jo is the second branch of a bakery and coffee shop chain set up by Jack Blackwell. The original location in Brook Green was named after his mother Deborah Jo Blackwell. He says, “The site is named in homage to her and in celebration of all the mums out there who make the world go round.” He also claims her Actually Mum’s Granola is the best Granola of all time and that it sells out in minutes when she brings out a batch. The business opened this Wednesday (29 October) and is applying for an alcohol licence which will allow it to sell booze on and off premises up to 8pm every day. Any representations about the application have to be made by 18 November.
Chiswick and London more generally are picking up on the European wide growth in demand for unique, high-quality baked goods. European market value for artisanal baked goods is expected to grow from $33.8 billion in 2023 to $48 billion by 2030. By the same year the number of branded coffee shops is expected to surpass the number of pubs in the UK with over 10,000 already operating. A 95% mark up on coffee and tea is attracting new entrants and private equity funded chains like Blank Street are aggressively expanding but post pandemic many Londoners prefer independent, neighbourhood bakeries that offer sourdough, vegan options, and seasonal specials many of which operated as community hubs during lockdown.
